Understanding Abuse

Abuse is not about not getting your own way. It's important to understand that it's a much more serious issue. The dictionary defines abuse as unfairly treating someone through harmful actions such as mistreatment, violence, neglect, exploitation, molestation, battering, hurting, and injury. It also includes the use of harsh and insulting language, name-calling, foul words, insults, invective, criticism, and verbal attacks, along with physical mistreatment.
It's truly unfortunate that many Christians experience emotional and/or physical abuse. However, before we can invite God's Help, it's important to acknowledge our struggles and honestly face the reality of our situation.
As Christians, we often turn to The Scriptures for God's Answers and Guidance to navigate the challenges and situations we encounter in our lives. However, many times we fail to understand what God's Word has to say or is saying to us. This can happen because we're searching for a specific chapter and verse that holds The Answers, when what we really need is to learn how to understand and apply God's Principles to our daily lives.
A principle is a truth that serves as a foundation for other truths and a rule of conduct. We are going to find many of our Father’s Principles in the following Scriptures, and we are going to learn how to apply them to our lives.

Paul wrote:
"Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.... Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.... Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.... Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters.... With goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to me."

Take The
Next Step

You will never hear of anyone who verbally abuses or batters another person claim they do it because they love that person or those people, or because it is how they desire to be treated themselves.
Anyone who mistreats or maligns others, whether by hurting them physically or psychologically, has truly let go. You may be living under the same roof, but if they neglect your needs or harm your body, soul, or spirit, they have emotionally or mentally left you.
The Lord Does Not expect or desire anyone to suffer mental or physical harm caused by someone who is meant to love you sacrificially. God’s Plan is for you to live Free from oppression and fear. When someone tries to control your thoughts or actions through threats or violence, they are actually enslaving you.
Scripture reminds us that God's Design is rooted in love, respect, and care — NEVER in harm or abuse. If you are experiencing abuse, please know that seeking safety, support, and wise counsel is not a lack of faith; it is a step toward healing and wholeness that God Desires for you.
If you are in an abusive situation, please reach out for help. Talk to a trusted pastor, counselor, or support group. Most importantly, take your pain to Jesus — He hears you. He Cares for you, and He Can Bring Healing to your life.
